Nowadays borders only exist on maps. The Schengen area consists of 26 European countries, thanks to this citizens of these countries can freely travel and only be checked when they cross the external border. The creation of the Schengen area is one of the greatest accomplishments of European Union.
It was created in 1985, when five European states decided to cut out internal border controls.
